A Melbourne schoolgirl attacked by a shark while swimming in the Whitsundays last month has undergone a leg amputation.
Hannah Papps, 12, was in Cid Harbour on holiday with her family on September 20 when she was mauled by an unidentified shark.
A day prior, Tasmanian Justine Barwick, 46, also suffered a bite on her left thigh while snorkeling in the same area.
It has since been revealed Hannah has had to have the injured leg amputated.
Hannah was captured using a wheelchair for the first time in a photo posted to the Instagram account of Paralympian Ellie Cole.
“Twelve-year-old Hannah lost her leg to a shark attack only three weeks ago while holidaying in the Whitsundays,” Cole wrote in the post.
“Today she jumped in a wheelchair for the first time and I couldn’t even keep up with her. She’s going to be great.”
Hannah and Ms Barwick’s attack prompted authorities to roll out baited drumlines.
Six tiger sharks were killed subsequently killed, sparking outcry from the Humane Society International and Sea Shepherd Australia.
“Baited drum lines targeting sharks in the area will do nothing to prevent further accidents,” Sea Shepherd’s Jonathan Clark said. Nine News
